He met Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education And scientific research, a delegation of experts from the international publisher Springer Nature, headed by Dr. Maria Hodges, Director of Publishing, Dr. Charlie Edwards, Executive Publisher, Mohamed Khalil, Regional Sales Director for the Middle East and Africa, and Ola Lawrence, Advisor to the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, and with the participation of a number of Egyptian publishers. .

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Ashour stressed that the Ministry is working according to an ambitious plan to export Egyptian knowledge production to the world, with the aim of transforming from importers to exporters of knowledge, stressing the importance of introducing the quality of Egyptian scientific research, and increasing the participation of Egyptian scientists and researchers in internationally prestigious scientific journals.

The Minister praised the partnership agreement with the international publisher Springer Nature, welcoming the work team during its visit to Egypt, and explained that the visit aims to activate the partnership and increase the number of Egyptian journals cooperating with the international publisher, stressing the Ministry’s keenness to raise the level of Egyptian scientific journals in line with their international counterparts, and to raise the level of Egyptian publishers to reach the required international standards.

The minister explained that Egypt has achieved notable achievements in the field of research, innovation and international publishing during the past period, and publishing Egyptian journals with Springer Nature has contributed to Egypt being at the forefront of international publishing at the level of Africa.

Transforming the Egyptian Knowledge Bank into an international bank

The minister pointed out that the ministry seeks to transform the Egyptian Knowledge Bank into an international bank, and to transfer the Egyptian experience in the bank’s services and the knowledge and research sources it contains to the world, in a way that enhances Egypt’s position in scientific publishing and knowledge export, pointing to the bank’s role in introducing scientific journals published in the Arabic language, And improving the classification of Egyptian universities and research institutions.

Dr. Ashour also pointed out that Egypt has advanced to 86th place globally in the Global Innovation Index, an increase of 10 places compared to previous years, and the Greater Cairo region has appeared among the top 100 scientific and technological clusters globally, occupying first place in Africa.

He stressed that international research cooperation in published research reached 58.3%, while the percentage of institutional cooperation with international bodies reached 22%, explaining that Egyptian researchers participated with approximately 150,000 international researchers in current research projects, which reflects the role of these efforts in linking research. Scientific cooperation with industry, and supports the national economy in multiple fields such as energy, animal production, health, and manufacturing industries.

For her part, Dr. Maria Hodges welcomed the cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, and gave a presentation on the activities of the international publisher.

The meeting included discussions between representatives of the international publisher and Egyptian publishers, about ways to enhance Egyptian scientific publishing, through cooperation with Springer Nature.

During its visit, the international publisher’s expert delegation is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with the editors-in-chief of the Egyptian magazines included in the agreement, including the 6 magazines that were converted from the full support system of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank to an independent business model system.
