Pope Tawadros II received, at the papal headquarters in Cairo on Wednesday, the Rev. Dr. Jerry Pillay, Secretary General of the World Council of Churches, and his accompanying delegation.

The Secretary-General expressed his happiness with his first visit to Egypt, praising the participation of a number of bishops of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the Central Committee and many other committees affiliated with the World Council of Churches, praising their remarkable activity and outstanding performance.
He also expressed his thanks to the Coptic Orthodox Church for its role in preserving the faith throughout the ages, and for the profound spirituality and teachings it provides that enable Christians around the world to benefit from and be influenced by them.
Rev. Pillay emphasized the Council’s extensive efforts to promote world peace, stressing the need to work to achieve justice and societal peace.
For his part, the Pope gave his guests an overview of the history of Egypt and the Coptic Orthodox Church, highlighting the good relations that unite the Church with all sectors of Egyptian society. He also stressed the strength of national unity that brings all sectors of the Egyptian people together, pointing out that the Coptic Church does not interfere in politics, But it participates in constructive national and community work for the sake of the nation.
The Pope concluded by emphasizing the Church’s commitment to promoting the values of practical love and peaceful coexistence.
The meeting was attended by Their Eminences Bishop Thomas, Metropolitan of Qusia, Mir, and Bishop Abraham, the General Bishop of Los Angeles.
