The Central Bank of Syria confirmed on Monday that the funds of depositors in banks are “safe.”
The Central Bank confirmed in a statement on the bank’s official page on the social networking site Facebook: “We reassure our citizens who deal with all operating banks that their deposits and money in these banks are safe and have not and will not be exposed to any harm.”
Yesterday, Sunday, footage from Agence France-Presse showed fighters rushing to stop thieves at the Central Bank, shooting in the air to disperse people and keep them away from the building.
Yesterday, Sunday, the militants issued a statement in which they said: “We stress the necessity of protecting public and private property in the capital, Damascus, and the need to protect it.”
The statement added that violators face “severe penalties that may include imprisonment or a fine.”
