Representative Mahmoud Essam, a member of the House of Representatives, submitted a referral request to the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and the Minister of Industry and Transport, regarding the challenges facing the localization and development of the ship building and repair industry in Egypt and the importance of giving the private sector the opportunity to effectively participate in this sector during the coming period.

Challenges of the shipbuilding and repair industry in Egypt

He stressed that the shipbuilding and repair industry at the global level reaches an annual value of approximately 200 billion dollars, of which Egypt’s share is less than one in a thousand, despite the many competitive advantages that Egypt has enjoyed during the recent period, the most important of which is the current boom in developing Egyptian ports in size and type, as well as corridor. The Suez Canal, through which approximately 15% of the volume of global maritime trade passes, and Egypt has been a pioneer throughout history in shipbuilding, and currently there are about 120 arsenals and companies distributed along the coasts. Egyptian and also on the shores of the Nile River and inland waters.

He pointed out that the shipbuilding industry is characterized by being a labor-intensive industry that requires large investments, and many feeding and auxiliary industries are growing alongside it, and thus requires greater efforts, especially at the level of including many companies that operate in this sector outside the state’s formal economy without a register or industrial licenses, in addition to the procedures that are being taken. Great efforts are made to develop the commercial maritime fleet, develop seaports, stimulate yacht tourism, and implement some successful partnerships between the government sector and private sector arsenals. This requires concerted efforts to localize and develop the shipbuilding and repair industry as one of the most important branches of the transportation industry. Maritime, overcoming obstacles and overcoming challenges that limit the launch of the private sector and investment in this field.

He also stressed that at the top of these challenges is the multiplicity of jurisdictions over the lands on which arsenals and private sector companies are located on the rivers and coasts, and the lack of legalization of their status, which hinders any development or development of them, as well as the absence of industrial zones affiliated with the Industrial Development Authority on the coasts and rivers that can be allocated to the private sector to establish arsenals. New ship building and repair, and in light of this, an action plan must be agreed upon between the concerned parties to advance the ship building and repair industry in a manner befitting Egypt’s Arab and regional history and status, with the participation of the government and the Federation of Industries, represented by the Building and Repair Division.
