The body of a person was found near the Brazilian Supreme Court in the capital, Brasilia, after two explosions were heard and the authorities evacuated the court headquarters, officials said late Wednesday.

A federal police spokesman told AFP: “We can confirm that there is a body in front of the Supreme Court.”

The court announced in a statement that two strong explosions were heard after the end of Wednesday’s session, noting that the judges had been evacuated safely.

The court is located in the Plaza de los Tres Poderes in Brasilia, which also includes the Presidential Palace and the Congress Building.

The Federal Police described the two explosions as an “attack,” adding that they had opened an investigation into the incident.

Its spokesman said that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was not in the presidential palace when the two explosions occurred.

The centers of power in Brasilia were subjected to a rebellion on January 8, 2023, a week after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential elections.

Thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters, angry at his loss, stormed government buildings, causing severe damage.

An explosion occurred on Wednesday as Brazil prepares to host the G20 summit next week in Rio de Janeiro.

Lula is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit.
