Dar revealed FatwaThe ruling on changing one’s name to a better name, indicating that changing one’s name to another name may be obligatory. This is if the name is specific to God Almighty. Like the Creator, or in a way that does not befit anyone except Him, Glory be to Him, the Most High. Such as the ruler of rulers, or including adding servitude to others, the Almighty; Like a sun slave and the like.
What is the ruling on changing one’s name to a better name?
Dar Al-Iftaa said on Facebook: It is desirable to change the name to something better if it is one of the names that people hate and are alienated from. Like war, and every name detests its banishment. Karbāh, Afāl, and every name contains purification and glorification of the soul. Such as the most honorable, the pious, and the like; When it was reported on the authority of Saeed bin Al-Musayyab, on the authority of his father, may God be pleased with them both: That his father came to the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, and said: “What is your name?” He said: Sadness. He said: “You are easy.” He said: I will not change the name my father gave me. Ibn al-Musayyab said: “The sadness has not ceased among us yet.” Narrated by al-Bukhari in his “Sahih.”
Other than that, it remains within the scope of permissibility in which changing or not changing the name is the same, without resulting in praise or condemnation of one of them, with the necessity of taking into account the legal procedures stipulated for that change if there is a reason for it.
