The new version of Google Flights provides you with new information to help you make a more informed decision about when to book a flight ticket.
“Most of the time, it’s better to book early, especially when your plans aren’t very flexible,” James Byers of Google Flights says in a blog post introducing the new features. “But flight prices change frequently, and there are often lower prices to be found with the right tools (and some persistence).”
Google Flights already shows you whether the current prices for your search are low, typical, or high compared to previous averages for the same flight, Byers points out, adding: “But the age-old question remains: Is it better to book now or wait?” For lower prices to come?
Improved analytics for booking flights
To help make the decision easier, Google Flights has launched improved analytics for searches which means you’ll be able to see when flight ticket prices are typically lowest based on the dates and destination you’ve selected.
In the example given by Byers, we see a flight query made, e.g.
In early September, a round-trip flight between New York and Miami departs on December 21 and returns eight days later. “The cheapest time to book is usually later, from September 13 to December 7,” Google Flights’ response says. She points out that “prices are currently high,” and adds that the lowest prices for such a trip are usually found one to three months before departure. It even tells you how much you can save if you book at the right time, which in this case is about $59.
“These analytics could tell you that the cheapest time to book similar flights is typically two months before departure, and you’re currently in that sweet spot,” Byers explains. “Or you might know that prices typically drop closer to departure, so you decide to wait before booking.” Either way, you can make this decision with a greater sense of confidence.
If you’re hesitant to wait for lower prices before making a reservation, Google Flights also offers price tracking, which, once set up, will automatically alert you if flight prices see a significant drop.
Price guarantee feature
Another feature is the Price Guarantee badge that appears when Google Flights thinks the price you’re looking at won’t drop before departure.
This means that if you go ahead and book, Google Flights will refund you the difference via Google Pay if the price of the ticket drops after you book it.
But take note: these price guarantees are part of a pilot program available for select Book on Google itineraries departing from the US.
The update looks like a useful addition to Google Flights and will hopefully save you a few bucks when it comes to your next trip.
Of course, it’s always worth checking other flight booking platforms for the best prices, with sites like Skyscanner, Momondo and Kayak also worth a look.
