Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, arrived at the site yesterday to follow up on the accident of a cargo ship running aground in the city of Qusayr, and how to combat spots of diesel fuel in the waters surrounding the ship’s site and the damage to coral reefs in the area.

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of the Environment, issued directives to form a committee from the Red Sea Reserves and the regional branch of the Environmental Affairs Agency to follow up on the incident in real time. Petrosafe Company was also coordinated and pushed to contain the pollution resulting from water entering the ship, and work to reduce it and clean the polluted beaches to protect the marine environment and coral reefs. located under the ship and reducing losses in the area, in coordination with the Red Sea Governorate and the General Petroleum Authority.

Assigning the Marine Pollution Control Center to work 24 hours a day

The Marine Pollution Control Center was also assigned to work 24 hours a day, in addition to coordination and field follow-up from specialists in the Red Sea branch, reserves, and the governorate.

The Minister of Environment explained that operations have been underway to contain oil spills in the coral reef area using rubber barriers since the early morning to prevent them from spreading to new areas. The formed committee also took water samples to analyze the pollution content, and an environmental report will be prepared to assess the damage in the next few days.

It turned out that the accident resulted from the sinking of a commercial ship carrying the flag of the Comoros, coming from Yemen, on its way to the port of Port Tawfiq.
