According to the Daily Mail, the urgent warning came to travelers from the United Kingdom about the spread of deadly viruses in 17 countries, including hemorrhagic eye disease.
The group 1 Imbox, Marburg and Oropoivirus strains have now been detected in 17 countries, including one hotspot in the Caribbean.
Officials are particularly dismayed by the rise in cases of Marburg virus, one of the most dangerous pathogens ever discovered.
It has already killed at least 15 people in Rwanda, with hundreds of people being monitored for suspected infection, and it is feared the virus, which causes bleeding from the eyes of infected people, could spread to other African countries.
Meanwhile, the Orobovirus, nicknamed sloth fever, has spread beyond its usual range in South America to the winter hotspot of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic.
A separate variant of mpox is currently circulating widely in Africa, with a small number of cases also recorded in Canada, the United Kingdom and Sweden.
The warnings stated that an outbreak of Marburg virus disease has been reported in Rwanda, and that there are ongoing outbreaks of the mpox type 1 strain and the Oropouche strain in several countries.
They added that they should also avoid visiting mines or bat caves and coming into contact with all wild animals, dead or alive, especially bats.
The statement continued that in 2024, specific outbreaks were recorded in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Peru and Panama, and there is no vaccine or specific treatment for the virus, which is named after the animal in which it was first discovered.
