After the return of the monster of the sixties…the future of the automobile industry in Egypt

Imagine with me a car made in Egypt competing strongly in the streets of the Middle East.. Is it possible that this will happen soon? How can Egypt, which was once a leader in the automobile industry, regain its position? Is the return of Al-Nasr Automotive Company after 15 years of hiatus enough? Is it difficult to compete with countries like Morocco and Algeria? In this video, we will explain to you what happens behind the scenes.

Let us tell the story from the beginning.. Al-Nasr Automotive Company, the name that used to fill Egyptian homes with pride, was founded in 1959 and was the first Egyptian company to manufacture cars.. Do you remember “Nasr Shaheen” and “Nasr Florida” cars? Arabic, which represented the national industry at its finest… Unfortunately, this company went through very difficult crises… Debts accumulated, production stopped, and employment contracted dramatically. In 2009, the sad decision was to liquidate the company…but in 2016, a glimmer of hope appeared when the government decided to settle the debts and began moving to revive this edifice again.

Today, after more than 15 years, Al-Nasr is back! The first batch of “Nasr Sky” buses has already been delivered… and the plan is not only to produce buses, but also to enter the world of electric cars… and the company has signed agreements with international partners such as the Chinese “Dong Feng” to manufacture the first fully electric car in Egypt, and a production line will begin. Its pilot production is scheduled for 2024

Ok..is this enough for Egypt to break into the world of the automobile industry and have a place in it?

The truth, no! Because the competition is very huge… Morocco, for example, which has become the first place in Africa… is expected to produce more than 600 thousand cars this year! Imagine the number of more than half a million cars produced annually by Morocco… and Algeria, which is building its industry again, could overtake Egypt in 2026.

But Egypt is not easy. It currently produces about 37 thousand cars annually, and with ambitious plans to increase production at an annual rate exceeding 11% until 2033, this number can reach more than 83 thousand cars per year. With the stability of the exchange rate and the easing of ground import restrictions, it will remain more. stability for investment.

The Egyptian government is not silent. It announced the National Program for the Development of the Automotive Industry, which provides great incentives to car manufacturers, whether for feeder industries or for complete manufacturing. Other than that, there are new partnerships with international companies such as Volkswagen.

But competition is not just numbers.. We are talking about a regional market full of challenges, such as political tensions and the difficulty of customs procedures, in addition to the delay in modern technologies.

The ambition is great… The new bus production line in Al-Nasr aims to produce 1,500 buses annually by 2027, with a local component percentage reaching 70%… The plan also includes exporting to Arab markets, and achieving a very high local manufacturing percentage of electric cars.

But let me ask you: Is it possible that the return of victory will be the step that will truly move the wheel of industry? Is it possible for Egypt to compete with developed markets like Morocco, which has become a destination for major international companies? Does competition require more than just ambition?

The answer is still before us.. and we are here to ask and think together.. Can Egyptian cars fill our streets and the streets of the region soon? Share your opinion with us and tell us your expectations for Al-Nasr Automotive Company
