Thousands of people in Georgia took part in pro-European marches on Monday, protesting against the decision of the ruling Georgian Dream party to suspend talks on joining the European Union.

In the capital, Tbilisi, police used water cannons and tear gas to confront demonstrators who fired fireworks at security forces.

Security personnel tried to keep the crowds away from the Parliament building.

Earlier Monday, the Interpress news agency reported that several schools and universities suspended operations indefinitely to show solidarity with the protesters.

The Ministry of Interior expected more protests and more than 200 arrests were recorded in the past few days.
