The Cabinet meeting held yesterday, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, announced that the government had taken important decisions, the first of which was that the Council approved a draft law amending some provisions of the Electricity Law promulgated by Law No. 87 of 2015, with the aim of increasing penalties for seizing electricity.
The amendments approved by the Council of Ministers in Law No. 87 of 2015 included two parts, the first of which was specific to people employed in the electricity sector, some of whom, unfortunately, are accused of making connections to steal electricity from citizens. The law states that their punishment is wrong, such that they are punished by imprisonment for a period of not less than a year and a fine of not less than 100 thousand pounds and no more. As for the second part of the amendments to the government’s decision to confront the theft of electricity, this is for people who insist on stealing electricity, and the new amendments to the law have determined the penalty for them, which will lead to imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and a fine of not less than 100 thousand pounds and not more than one million pounds, or one of the following. These two penalties will be doubled in the event that theft of electricity is repeated again, and in the event that this theft results in cutting off the electricity, then amendments are made. The law stipulates that the penalty will be imprisonment.
The amendments to Law No. 70 of 2015, which were approved by the Council of Ministers, also included the imposition of a prison sentence for a period of not less than two years and a fine of not less than 200 thousand pounds and not more than 2 million pounds, or one of the two penalties in the event that the citizen intervenes in an authorized manner to steal electricity and operate special equipment, supplies, and devices.
