The Sharm El-Sheikh International Youth Theater Festival, headed by artist and director Mazen El-Gharabawy, dedicated a symposium to celebrate the late director Jalal El-Sharkawy, the namesake of the ninth session, and a signing ceremony for a book prepared by Dr. Medhat El-Kashef as part of the festival’s publications. The meeting was moderated by Dr. Abeer Fawzi, one of director Jalal El-Sharkawy’s students.
Celebrating the late Jalal Al-Sharqawi
At the beginning, Dr. Abeer Fawzi said: The late artist Jalal Al-Sharqawi had a great theater school, from which many students graduated, and the Sharm El-Sheikh International Youth Theater Festival is interested in honoring the symbols of Arab theatre, and today we celebrate one of the symbols of our Egyptian theatre, in the presence of Dr. Medhat Al-Kashef, who had a strong relationship with Al-Sharqawi. Therefore, he wrote a book about the deceased in the ninth session of the festival, titled Flashes and Situations, as he is the best person to tell us about his artistic career.
Dr. Medhat Al-Kashef, former dean of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, spoke about his relationship with director Jalal Al-Sharqawi, saying: I would like to mention at the beginning of my talk about the late director Jalal Al-Sharqawi, with whom I had a long journey that extended for 40 years, and that I had many positions with him, and I remember one of them in which he The late director Youssef Chahine many years ago, and Joe told me at the time that I would write in memoirs in the future about my strong relationship with the late director Jalal Al-Sharqawi, and in fact, what Youssef Chahine said came true.

Medhat Al-Kashef added: I want to talk about Al-Sharqawi, the human being above all else, because his outward appearance as a strong, harsh, and always sullen personality is not real, but what is inside him is an unprecedented human generosity and gentleness, and he is a human being who allows differences of opinion for those around him, and his comedy is present, and he always has an important role. He is very influential in the life of everyone with whom he has a professional or humanitarian relationship. He has a special imprint, because he has a great history of theatrical creativity. He directed a large number of successful plays, and he is a part of the deceased’s life that no one knows, as he was also an extraordinary child.
Medhat Al-Kashef also talked about the cause of Jalal Al-Sharqawi’s death: During his childhood, he contracted typhoid disease, which at this stage was isolated in a tent with his mother, who refused to leave him, and his brother, Hilmi Al-Sharqawi, who loved theater, but his father refused to let him enter the field, and when Jalal fell in love with… Al-Sharqawi, the theatre-maker, was aware that his father would refuse, as he had done with his brother, but in school at the primary level, the Arabic language teacher chose him to play an important role during a play held at the school, and after he graduated from high school, he applied to the College of Science, because he knew that his father He refused to enter the academy. All of this shaped Al-Sharqawi’s personality artistically. Then he went on a mission to Russia, and at that time he did many jobs outside the theater in order to support himself.
For his part, artist and director Mazen Al-Gharabawi said: Dr. Jalal Al-Sharqawi has great charisma and presence, and I learned a lot from him during my studies at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, and I was very keen to learn a lot from him, because he is of artistic value, and I benefited a lot from him, so I had a great opportunity to become a professional while I was there. With him, on an important journey in the life of the human relationship with the late man, especially when his theater was threatened with closure, because he considered me like his son, and I had previously performed with him in the theatrical show Dounia Aragouzat at the Jalal Al-Sharqawi Theater.
During the symposium and signing ceremony, a number of attendees made many interventions in which they talked about positions, memories, and lessons learned with the late Jalal Al-Sharqawi, including the artist Khaled Al-Dhahabi, Dr. Sayed Khater, the Syrian artist Thamer Al-Arbeed, the journalist writer and director Gamal Abdel Nasser, the journalist writer Muhammad Toaima, and the great director Issam. After that, a number of attendees signed the book about the late director Jalal Al-Sharqawi by his author, Dr. Medhat Al-Adl.
Shirk Al-Sheikh Youth Theater Festival
The Sharm El-Sheikh International Festival for Youth Theater will hold its ninth session under the chairmanship of artist and director Mazen Al-Gharbawi, and its activities will continue until November 20. The session bears the name of the late great director Jalal Al-Sharqawi. The festival is managed by Dr. Engy El-Bastawi, and the head of the festival’s Supreme Committee is producer Hisham Soliman. The festival is honorably chaired by the Lady of Arab Theater. Samiha Ayoub, and it is held under the patronage of the Minister of Culture, Dr. Ahmed Fouad Hanno, and Major General Khaled Mubarak, Governor of South Sinai, and with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Tourism Promotion Authority.
