Twenty-three people were killed Sunday in eastern Brazil when a bus veered off a mountain road and fell into a valley in Alagoas state, local authorities said.

Rescue services confirmed that 22 people were killed on the spot and a pregnant woman later died in hospital, the Alagoas regional government said in a statement.

Brazilian media reported that the accident also resulted in a large number of injuries, noting that the bus was carrying 40 people.

State Governor Paulo Dantas declared three days of mourning as a result of this “tragedy.”

It is worth noting that the accident occurred in an inaccessible mountainous area called Serra da Barriga.
